For over 25 years, the City of Rawlins has operated its own landfill about 3 miles northeast of the
City. For years this was a standard trench-fill operation, but in 1996 the City, through the use of
grant monies and other resources, converted to a balefill operation for the standard household
trash. A new building with a Mosley-Badger baler was constructed and put on line. That action
helped to greatly clean up the area, control blowing debris, and extend the life of the present
location from about eight years to an estimated 25 years. The trash is now dumped inside a
building, pushed to a conveyor, and fed to a baler which produces baled and bound units about 3
x 3 x 4 feet. These are then carried to a prepared trench where the bales are stacked and all but
the working face covered. The landfill operation recycles 90 % of all large metal objects (autos,
refrigerators, stoves), virtually all lead-acid batteries, about 400 gallon of used motor oil per
month and 75 % of all wood products and yard wastes.
